Most people who visit Brazil for the first time come back talking about three foods: churrasco, açaí, and paçoca. The first two have made their way to Dubai in recognisable forms. Paçoca has not, at least not until now.
We added paçoca to our menu as a topping because it is a genuinely Brazilian ingredient that pairs exceptionally well with açaí, and because we could not find it anywhere else in Dubai.
What Paçoca Is
Paçoca (pronounced pa-SO-ka) is a traditional Brazilian sweet made from ground roasted peanuts, sugar, and salt, pressed into a crumbly, slightly dry block or rolled into a ball. The texture is somewhere between peanut butter and a dry shortbread, crumbling between your fingers and dissolving on the tongue. The flavour is intensely peanutty with a gentle sweetness and a background saltiness that stops it from being cloying.
In Brazil, paçoca is everywhere. It is the snack eaten at Festa Junina, the June festival celebrations held across the country. It is sold at street markets in Rio and São Paulo, at supermarkets in individual wrappers, and made at home from recipes that families guard as closely as any other tradition. Brazilian children grow up eating paçoca the way British children grow up eating digestive biscuits.
The most famous version comes from São Paulo state, where peanut farming has been a major agricultural industry since Japanese immigrants brought improved cultivation techniques in the early twentieth century. The peanuts used for paçoca are roasted to a specific depth of colour and ground to a specific consistency, and the result is a product that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
Why Paçoca Works on Açaí
The combination sounds unusual until you try it. Açaí is earthy, slightly bitter, and deeply flavoured. Paçoca is sweet, nutty, and crumbly. Together they create a contrast of textures and flavours that is immediately addictive.
The fat content of the peanuts in paçoca also pairs well nutritionally with the healthy fats already present in açaí. The combination delivers slow-burning energy, protein, and carbohydrate in a ratio that works well as a post-workout meal or a substantial morning bowl.
The Paçoca Bomba Bowl
Our Paçoca Bomba bowl builds on this combination. It is organic açaí with Brazilian paçoca crumbled across the top, alongside banana and granola. The paçoca crumbles into the cold açaí and softens slightly at the contact points while staying crunchy on top. It is one of the most distinctive bowls on our menu and one of the few places in Dubai where you can eat paçoca at all.
If you have never tried it, come in and try the Paçoca Bomba. If you have tried it in Brazil and have been missing it, welcome back.
